Rigatoni is Rome's tube - wider than penne, cut straight rather than on the angle, and ridged along its whole length. Rummo makes this one in Benevento from durum wheat semolina and yellow pea flour, which holds the shape firm enough to go into the oven without collapsing. That is what the width is for: a meat ragu works its way inside the tube, and baked dishes hold together.
